Children with private insurance have better access to specialty care than other children.

Researchers reviewed 30 studies on the relationship between access to specialty care and insurance coverage and found that children with private insurance have better access to such care than those who have public coverage or no insurance. Although children insured by Medicaid or SCHIP have better access to specialty care than uninsured children, their access to specialists is worse and their specialists are less likely to be board-certified compared with privately insured children.
