Awareness Ideas

This page is set up to post ideas for awareness events and fundraisers for consideration. It will give us a place to put such ideas to draw from later, like an online hat with lots of 3x5 cards.

We are on a mission to spread awareness about vasculitis and about the various vasculitis related organizations. We are also on a mission to raise some money to pay for these efforts, and if we are ambitious, we can raise enough money to donate funds for vasculitis research! The vasculitis foundation gives seed grants every year to jump start research projects that might find a cure. You can help.

No idea is too big or too small. If you have an idea for an awareness event, or a support event, please contact me via Email and I will help you get the word out. Or go to the Contact page and reach me that way.

Participating in the Rio Grande Run for the Zoo

The 24th Annual Run for the Zoo
Sunday, May 3rd 2009
http://www.bioparksociety.org/runforthezoo/

The way I see this working is we get a group of us to sign up as volunteers for their event. In exchange, we get whatever the normal perks are for volunteering, but instead of wearing their shirt, we wear our shirts. Plus we negotiate a booth or table where we can hand out literature and talk about what people can do to help find a cure. Most notably, donate money for research.

T-Shirt design for NM Chapter of the VF?

posted Mar 19, 2009, 2:10 PM by Joseph Carpenter

We are a chapter, but we also have our own identity.

So, lets brainstorm ideas for our own local T-Shirt design. That should let people know we are here, and also direct them to the local and international websites for more information.

Any artists out there? :o)

UNM Lobos - Vasculitis Awareness Night

posted Mar 19, 2009, 2:08 PM by Joseph Carpenter

This "Awareness Night" concept could be extended to other venues, like Thunderbirds Basketball games, Scorpions Hockey, etc.

Any large venue that pulls a crowd should be a target for ideas about ways to spread awareness.

Just going to these events in your Vasculitis Foundation T-Shirts will help a lot.

Albuquerque Isotopes - Vasculitis Awareness Night?

posted Mar 19, 2009, 2:07 PM by Joseph Carpenter

What about talking to the Albuquerque Isotopes about doing a Vasculitis Awareness Night at the ball park? We could arrange to "give away" wrist bands (trade for discounted tickets?) or trade for donation? Get cost of wrist bands sponsored? How to get media exposure for this event? When to arrange it? Is it too late for this year?

Form Awareness Coalitions

posted Feb 22, 2009, 4:38 PM by Joseph Carpenter

We can develop partnerships with other local foundations to share resources and manpower.

I am in communication with some other small non-profit groups that like us, are getting started with limited resources. By forming partnerships, we can make a louder noise and thus gain more and better visibility.

We can form or join something in New Mexico like what is being done on a national level by National Organization for Rare Disorders, Inc. (NORD). NORD, a 501(c)3 organization, is a unique federation of voluntary health organizations dedicated to helping people with rare "orphan" diseases and assisting the organizations that serve them. NORD is committed to the identification, treatment, and cure of rare disorders through programs of education, advocacy, research, and service. http://www.rarediseases.org/

By combining our local efforts to increase awareness about rare disorders, we can attend health fairs, and form legislative coalitions to promote efforts to improve health care for patients with rare disorders, which by indirect association would improve health care for everyone. If the lowest common denominator is addressed, then all patients in New Mexico will benefit.

Host a Pampered Chef event in your home

posted Feb 19, 2009, 10:36 AM by Joseph Carpenter   [ updated Feb 19, 2009, 10:41 AM ]

The Pampered Chef consultants are now booking home cooking shows in Albuquerque. These shows are great for fundraising events. They are very entertaining and all hosts receive free products and extensive discounts.

If you are interested in hosting one of these unique events as a fundraiser for the VF, or for our local chapter, please contact me, and I will help set it up as a benefit event.

Participate in other events as a group

posted Feb 19, 2009, 8:16 AM by Joseph Carpenter

There are lots of other organizations hosting events all the time.

Run for the Zoo, as one example is an annual event. If a group of us were to walk the one kilometer with a VF banner, that would possibly even get news media coverage on print, television and even mention on the radio.

There are tons of events every year that we could choose to participate in, and maybe even set up a booth to pass out literature.

What do you think? Please let me know.

Invite a doctor for dinner

posted Feb 19, 2009, 8:13 AM by Joseph Carpenter

One idea proposed is to invite a doctor to our monthly chapter meetings.

The doctor gets a free meal, and might be asked to give a short talk on some topic about vasculitis. Mostly, we would just enjoy the company of good people and share information. Before I do this, I would like to see more of you coming to meetings to make it worth the doctors time. Then I will ask you to invite your doctor to dinner.

What do you think? Let me know.

Sponsor a baseball tourment

posted Feb 19, 2009, 8:09 AM by Joseph Carpenter

Most of these tournaments are break even events. By hitching our wagon to their star, we get the crowd, and they get the happy feeling of helping a good cause.

I have made tentative contact with some folks about possibly doing this in 2009. How many of you will be willing to help out if we need people to talk about vasculitis, and pass out literature, sell wristbands, etc.??

Contact Joseph Carpenter if you have an interest in helping spread awareness about vasculitis in New Mexico.
